Save the Date: Fall Symposium.

Missouri Archaeological SocietyUncategorized

The 2019 Fall Symposium will be Saturday, September 7 in Revere, Missouri at Battle of Athens State Historic Site, the location of the most northernmost Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River.
The theme for Archaeology Month 2019 is Vessels of the Past. Morning presentations will be held in the shelter house at the park.
Presentations will be followed by a picnic lunch at the same shelter house. Lunch will be beef BBQ and buns, au gratin potatoes, pasta salad, tea or lemonade, and chocolate cake for $10 catered by Steve’s Family Restaurant.
Following lunch, attendees will join in a guided tour of the Battle of Athens Site. Next, attendees will caravan to nearby (24 miles) Iliniwek State Historic Site for a presentation and tour. Iliniwek represents the only known Illinois (Peoria and Moingwena) Indian village in Missouri. This village was visited by Marquette and Jolliet in 1673. They noted the visit in their journals and indicated that it had perhaps 8,000 inhabitants at that time.
Be sure to make plans to attend and learn more about topics relative to Missouri archaeology and these two unique state historic sites.
Pre-registration is required for those joining us for lunch; an R.S.V.P is requested for those attending, but not having lunch. There is no cost to attend. Registration materials will be mailed to all members and will also be available on the MAS website.
The 2019 Fall Symposium is sponsored by Missouri State Parks and the Iliniwek Chapter.
